Do I need a dehumidifier?
What relative humidity is, what levels are ideal for comfort and health. When it becomes necessary to get a dehumidifier.
Relative humidity represents the percentage of water vapor present in the air.
Fully saturated air has a relative humidity of 100%, while completely dry air corresponds to 0%. The ideal relative humidity for human comfort is between 50% and 55%. Within this range, we experience optimal comfort throughout the year — both in winter and in summer. Above this level, we tend to feel the cold and heat more intensely in their respective seasons. These humidity levels are also considered the most beneficial for our health, as they help prevent allergies, colds, and muscle or joint discomfort. In addition to our well-being, maintaining proper humidity also protects our home and belongings — including structural materials, furniture, and electrical appliances. It is therefore advisable to measure humidity levels with a reliable hygrometer and, if the relative humidity in our space exceeds 55–60%, to consider purchasing a dehumidifier. The higher the humidity, the more essential a dehumidifier becomes. Common signs of excess humidity include visible mold, musty smells, fogged or dripping windows, and condensation on glass surfaces — especially during winter months.
