The main concern when purchasing an electric convector heater is usually its energy consumption. What is the European Ecodesign 2024/1103 directive, and how does it help reduce the energy use of convector heaters?

A convector heater with a digital thermostat that’s properly sized for the room it’s installed in operates with up to 60% thermostat-controlled pauses. On an average winter day, in a home with standard insulation and normal indoor and outdoor temperatures, it runs continuously for the first 15–30 minutes. Once the desired room temperature is reached, it maintains it while consuming roughly half of its nominal power, thanks to the thermostat’s high sensitivity (±0.5 °C or even less). As a result, its operation is very energy-efficient.

Let’s take as an example a 1500 W digital convector heater. Its rated power (1500 W) means that if it runs continuously for one hour without the thermostat switching off, it will consume 1.5 kWh (you can check the cost per kWh on your electricity bill). However, when installed in a room of about 10–12 m² with a ceiling height of around 2.8 m and good insulation, once the desired temperature is reached, the digital thermostat will be switching the heating element on and off with very small temperature deviations (± 0.5 °C or less). This way, it consumes only the exact amount of energy needed to maintain the desired temperature. Under such conditions, you can expect up to 50–60% thermostat-controlled pauses, meaning that the actual hourly consumption will be around 0.6–0.75 kWh. If you know roughly how many hours per day it will run, you can easily estimate your total energy consumption. Please note that these figures are based on average practical measurements and can vary depending on several factors, such as insulation quality, heat losses, desired indoor temperature, room size, outdoor temperature (climate zone), and hours of operation. Nevertheless, compared with other electric heating systems, a digital convector heater stands out for its low energy consumption and consistent performance.

Like all wall-mounted electric heating appliances, convector heaters must comply with the European Ecodesign 2024/1103 directive. Models that meet this standard feature a digital thermostat with a sensitivity of ±0.5 °C or even lower. They also include useful functions such as weekly programming, open-window detection, and in some cases, motion sensors. All these features are designed to prevent unnecessary energy consumption — ensuring that the heater provides fast, efficient warmth, while keeping running costs low.

Additionally, unlike central heating systems, convector heaters allow for full autonomy across different rooms in an apartment or house — offering even greater energy savings. For example, if you have a home or workspace of around 80 m² divided into 4–5 rooms, there’s no need to keep the entire area at the same high comfort temperature. With convector heaters, you can easily keep warm only the rooms you’re using, while maintaining lower temperatures in the rest. This way of heating saves energy and lets you warm up any room quickly whenever you need to.
